Dental Crowns Q & A

What are crowns?

Crowns are oral prosthetics that restore a decaying or damaged tooth to its near-original appearance, strength, and size. Once bonded in place, a crown covers the entire portion of your tooth above the gum line.

What are crowns used for?

Q Smiles Dental uses crowns to:

  • Protect weak or decaying teeth
  • Hold dental bridges in place
  • Attach to dental implants
  • Make cosmetic modifications
  • Support teeth with large fillings

You might also benefit from a crown if you have severely stained or discolored teeth that don’t respond to teeth whitening.

What does getting a crown involve?

Traditional crowns typically required several appointments, but Q Smiles Dental offers CEREC same-day crowns. That means you can receive your new restoration on the same day as your initial consultation.

At the beginning of your appointment, your Q Smiles Dental provider conducts an oral exam and reviews your dental health history. The team then takes oral X-rays to determine the extent of the damage or decay.

After gathering this information, your provider takes a series of digital impressions with an intraoral scanner. Digital scans are more accurate than traditional molds and allow your provider to design a custom crown that fits comfortably over the unique curves and cusps of your tooth.

Your provider uploads your scans to a computer-aided design (CAD) program. They finalize the crown design and transfer it to the CEREC milling machine. The CEREC machine manufactures your crown out of a block of porcelain, a process that takes about 45 minutes. While you wait, you can read a book, take a nap, or use your smartphone.

Once the machine finishes, the Q Smiles Dental team administers a local anesthetic and prepares your tooth to receive the crown. The team shaves a thin layer of enamel from the top and sides of your tooth and bonds the crown in place. Your provider then polishes the crown, assesses your bite, and provides you with care instructions.

How long do crowns last?

Crowns typically last 10-15 years. To keep your crown in optimal condition, Q Smiles Dental recommends brushing twice a day and visiting the office every six months for an oral exam and professional cleaning. In addition, try to avoid bad habits like nail-biting, chewing on ice cubes, or opening objects with your teeth.

To see if crowns are right for you, request a consultation at Q Smiles Dental. Book an appointment with the online scheduling tool or call the nearest office today.
