Teeth Whitening Q & A

Why are my teeth stained and yellow?

The leading cause of yellow teeth is the natural aging process. Over the years, your tooth enamel wears away, revealing the dentin underneath. Dentin is naturally yellow, so your teeth appear the same yellow hue.

Factors that can cause your teeth to stain or discolor include:

  • Drinking beverages with tannins like red wine, tea, or coffee
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Taking medication with tetracycline
  • Eating foods like tomatoes, berries, or curry

You might also develop stained or discolored teeth if you use tobacco. The nicotine and tar in tobacco can seep into your teeth, making them appear dingy.

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dentistry technique that uses safe, FDA-approved bleaching solutions to eliminate stains and brighten your teeth. The majority of teeth whitening products currently on the market use hydrogen or carbamide peroxide. These medical-grade products are harmless and provide long-lasting results.

What are the types of teeth whitening?

Q Smiles Dental offers two types of teeth whitening, including:

In-office whitening with Venus White®

In-office teeth whitening with Venus White can make your teeth significantly brighter during a single, one-hour appointment.

At the beginning of treatment, your provider places a protective dam over your gums and tongue. They then apply a whitening peroxide solution to your teeth and let it sit for about 30 minutes.

The peroxide releases oxygen molecules that help break up visible stains. This allows light to better penetrate your teeth, making them appear whiter and more attractive. Once your teeth absorb the solution, your provider rinses your mouth and sends you home with a list of care instructions.

Opalescence® take-home whitening kits

If you’d rather whiten your teeth at home, consider an Opalescence kit. Each take-home kit contains a bleaching solution, syringe, and two plastic mouthpieces.

You use the syringe to transfer the whitening solution into the mouthpieces and wear them for three to four hours, whenever it is most convenient. Over time, the solution cuts through stains, making your smile appear brighter and whiter.

Does teeth whitening treatment last forever?

Teeth whitening treatment isn’t permanent, but the results typically last for four to six months and sometimes even longer. If you want to prevent stains from recurring, consider drinking with a straw and avoiding beverages like coffee or cola.

It’s also important to practice good oral hygiene. Q Smiles Dental recommends brushing twice a day, flossing regularly, and visiting the office every six months for a professional cleaning.
